Abstract:
Nowadays, petroleum marker inspection system requires chemical extraction with reagent called developer to generate the color followed by qualification with UV-Vis spectrophotometer. This two-step process led to the difficulty in an on-site detection. To overcome such problem, we have developed the practical petroleum marker system using colorimetric paper-based technique to detect the vapor of marker and smartphone to quantify the color change. In
this work, volatile aromatic compounds furfural was used as a marker which was added into commonly used fuels at
concentration between 10-40 ppm. Then various developers such as phenylhydrazine and 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine
were coated on the filter paper and placed on the lid of petri dish having holes (Ø = 15 mm). After incubation for 20 minutes in petri dish, the green color was developed for filter paper coated with phenylhydrazine while the orange
color was observed in case of 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine. Moreover, we recorded color changes with smartphone
camera and quantified the data using an ImageJ program. For phenylhydrazine developer, deltaE (ΔE) values of 15-28
were detected while ΔE values of 10-20 were observed when 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine was used. Our developed
system is user-friendly as it can avoid the need of traditional chemical extraction and complicated instruments
