A microscale laboratory experiment using the colorimetric method to quantify the reaction rate of alcohol oxidation
Abstract:
This research aimed to design a microscale laboratory experiment using the colorimetric method for determination of the reaction rate of alcohol oxidation. Under this experiment, three major factors, including types of alcohol, concentration, and temperature, were studied against the reaction rate. The chemical reagents used are
potassium permanganate (KMnO4) solution and various types of alcohol (methanol, ethanol, propan-2-ol, and tert-butyl alcohol). Upon treatment of KMnO4 solution on a glass microfiber filter with alcohol, the reaction rate was evaluated by observing color changes from purple to brown color due to the reduction of permanganate ion (MnO4
-) into manganese dioxide (MnO2). For the quantitative analysis, the color on each sample was recorded in terms of the intensity
of an RGB stack by using ImageJ and further converted into the absorbance. The absorbance was plotted against time
and the reaction rate was obtained from the slope of the graph. For different types of alcohol, the result showed that propan-2-ol had the highest reaction rate compared to other alcohols. For concentration and temperature factors, the
results suggested that the reaction rate was increased with increasing alcohol concentrations and reaction temperature.
Based on this study, the microscale laboratory experiment can be used for qualitative and quantitative analyses against the reaction rate and it also provides time- and cost-effective experiment
