Abstract:
The increased interest and uptake of urban agriculture is assisting many countries in their drive to achieve a wide number of sustainable development goals. Urban agriculture can help deliver timely and innovative opportunities to sustainably enhance cities resilience to threats in terms of improving self-reliance, food security, providing local food supply and employment, growing local economies and skills, improving health and wellbeing, helping address climate change, addressing economic downturns, and helping mitigate other risks. This thesis presents the findings from the qualitative and quantitative research undertaken by the author on this topic. It particularly seeks to focus on how to improve and increase urban agriculture and food security initiatives within Bangkok to help aid its resilience and that of its citizens. In order help determine what is necessary to achieve this, urban agriculture initiatives worldwide were critically examined to primarily identify the major factors to be considered for establishing this proposed initiative for Bangkok. Then, both qualitative and quantitative research were undertaken to determine appropriate criteria suitable for Bangkok, and potentially for Thailand, through personal interviews with key stakeholders and through further observation. The results of this research have implications for public policy-makers and program planners on both mistakes to avoid and the best ways to undertake and encourage urban agriculture programs. It also has implications for members of the general public involved in raising awareness in this topic area and wishing to do good. Furthermore, this work shows that there are a growing number of individuals demonstrating a clear willingness to join existing and proposed urban agriculture programs and activities, and that there are many individuals who are interested in being involved in helping provide opportunities for employment and also free food for those less fortunate than themselves through urban agriculture initiatives. The final outcome from this work is a proposed set of urban agriculture guidelines for Bangkok to help increase its food security and the wellbeing of its citizens
