The relationship between self-efficacy and reading comprehension of secondary school students

Abstract: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between self-efficacy in reading comprehension and reading comprehension test performance in Thai EFL students. The study investigated 44 grade 12 students studying in a Mathematics and Arts (English) program at a Thai government school. A quantitative method of data collection was applied to answer the research questions. The data were gathered using a questionnaire survey to examine the learners’ beliefs about their reading abilities and using the reading part of the English O-NET test to measure students’ reading ability. The findings indicate that the level of self-efficacy among participants was moderate but participants’ overall reading test results were at a high level. The statistical correlation analysis revealed a strong relationship between Thai learners’ self-efficacy in reading and reading competence in a significant level
