The power struggle : the interrelations in the new great game in Central Asia
Abstract:
Within International Relations, Landlocked Central Asia has become highlighted as the New Great Game due to the geopolitical interactions across the region. Presently both Central Asian states and external players, in particular Russia, Europe, the United States and China are involved regionally in various agendas that include diplomatic, political, economic, security and energy. In addition, India, Iran and Turkey are also engaged in Central Asian countries. These internal and external actors are also involved in bilateral interrelations and multilateral mechanisms. The objective behind researching this study was to investigate the direction of the ongoing strategic game and the position of the players. The conclusion of this study is that the interrelations among the actors in the Central Asian region are driven by the behaviour of these players according to the geopolitical environment and multipolar structures. Central Asian countries implement multi directional foreign policies to maintain a neutral role, pursue interests and balance the influence of external actors. On the other hand, geopolitics have shaped the behaviour of the external actors to strategically interact, counterweight, cooperate and compete amongst each other in order to keep the status quo and strengthen their positions
