Abstract:
The objectives of this study are to examine (1) trust in police, legal compliance, and cooperation with police (2) factors influencing trust in police and (3) the impact of trust in police on legal compliance and cooperation with police. Questionnaire was employed to collect the data. The respondents were 971 people whose age is 20 years old and older living in the Eastern region. Multi-stage sampling was employed in this study. The data were analyzed using structural equation modeling (SEM). Findings showed that the respondents had quite high level of trust in police, cooperation with police, and legal compliance. There were three factors influencing trust in police which are police performance, fairness, and fear of crime in that order. However, corruption and victimization had no influence on trust in police. In addition, the findings revealed that trust in police has a positive impact on legal compliance and cooperation with police respectively. Several policy and practical implications of the findings that may extend our knowledge on this topic are noted.
