Abstract:
The interplay between social media and political communication has been prevalent in the information-driven 21st century. Looking at social media as an instrument for political discourse, this research investigates the wide-ranging effects of the U.S. democracy-themed statements posted on Facebook in response to Thailands political upheaval and multiple rounds of violence from November 2013 to May 2014. With Thailand at a critical juncture in the 6-month political crisis that followed the dismissal of a controversial blanket amnesty bill in November 2013, these statements articulated by the U.S. Department of State through the U.S. Embassy Bangkoks Facebook page captured the attention of the political elite in Thailand. The gist of this study zeroes in on the question of whether or not these online postings-proliferated by an international actor wielding the rhetoric of democracy as an antidote to Thailands political conflict-could exacerbate elite relations and foment political instability in Thailand
