Thai government policy toward Japanese automobile MNCs in the 21st century
Abstract:
The concept of downward mobility is very interesting in term of the state strategies. The concept is used to describe the situation in the developing countries that try to maintain the comparative advantages by keeping lower production cost in the sense of industrialized countries. Thailand can be recognized as one of these countries. However, if looking into deeper in the automobile industry, it is not to be vast concerned because some of the industry can afford the payment from pay higher the standard rates, some cannot. This is to study the impact of this concept to the automobile industry by describing the concept as well as analyze the policy evaluation after the year 2000 that World Trade Organization rules of trade liberalization. Thai automobile industry has to cope with the WTOs rules. Thai government cancelled the Local Content Requirement which is recognized as the non-tariffs barrier. Meanwhile, Thai government launched the fiscal policy packages to manage and cope with this situation. Moreover, Thai government also initiated the project of Product Champion in order to promote the automobile industry as well as attract foreign direct investment from special fiscal incentive for the company who would like to sign in with the project. After that Thai government have some more project in order to develop and encourage the automobile industry such as the so-called Detroit of Asia. These initiatives and projects are evaluated. In addition, Japanese automobile MNCs strategies toward Thai automobile industries are provided in case study of Toyota. Last but not the least, the SWOT analysis is conducted in order to analyze the capability of Thai automobile industry to compete in the international arena
