Abstract: The purpose of this study was to investigate the problems on the pronunciation of English vowel sounds of Mathayomsuksa 6 students and the degree of seriousness in each pronunciation problem. The subjects comprised 10 students selected by means of a simple random sampling method. The research tool is an English pronunciation test with focus on words ending with voiced and voiceless consonants and words with tense and lax vowels. The results of the study indicated that the students encountered problems with the pronunciation of vowel sounds in various forms, including vowels in words ending with a voiced consonant, vowels in words with a voiceless consonant in final positions and tense vowels ending with a voiceless consonant. The students' pronunciation problem on vowels preceding voiced consonants was at a high degree of seriousness, with 26.00 per cent of correct pronunciation, while their problem on pronouncing tense vowels was at moderate degree of seriousness, at 44.35 per cent. The students' problems on the pronunciation of vowels preceding voiceless consonants and those on pronouncing lax vowels were at a low degree of seriousness, with 85.00 and 73.48 per cent of correct pronunciation, respectively.
