Abstract: This documentary research entitled "Modern Fantasy in Roald Dahl's Selected Works" intends to analyze elements of modern fantasy in Road Dahl's selected works. The central focus of this study is on five novels, including James and the Giant Peach, The BFG, Matilda, The Twist and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. The elements of fantasy examined are preposterous characters and situations and extraordinary world. The results of this indicated that four protagonists from four novels are preposterous characters. All but one the character has favorable and likeable characteristics. All but one character grows and changes for the better. From James and the Giant Peach, James gradually changed from being normal to being preposterous. In contrast, the BFG from The BFG was preposterous at first and later he changed to become less preposterous in some way. Matilda from Matilda was preposterous from the very beginning. Like the BFE, she changed to become less preposterous at last. Mr. and Mrs. Twist from Twists were the only preposterous characters with unfavorable characteristics and they never changed. Because of that, they were punished severely. As for preposterous situations, the researcher found them in four novels, James and the Giant Peach, The BFG, Matilda, and The Twits.. It is interesting to find that only one of the five novels, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, was clearly set in extraordinary world. As for implications of the study of Roald Dahl's works, the researcher found four points worth noting. First, we learn that to write successfully, the writer needs to have specific audience in mind. Second, we learn that family love, understanding, and warmth are important to the growth of children. Third, we learn that environments may not be influential to children's character. Finally, we learn that modern fantasy can be both educational and entertaining.
