The effect of interactive reading on English reading ability
Abstract:
The objectives of this research were to examine the effect of interactive reading on
students English reading ability and whether the effect of IR instruction can be
sustained. This was a classroom action research. Fifty-six students who studied the
English Reading and Writing course in the second semester of the academic year 2019
were asked to participate in this study. The instruments were 1) two samples of each
reading text in the narrative, expository, and argumentative genres were randomly
selected based on these criteria: students literacy experiences and the readability and
notion of text types; 2) The set of questions used in the IR approach on padlet
encouraged the students to read through the essays based on Kolkers (1979) IR factors
(affective, cognitive, and linguistic behaviors); 3) one set of questions was used as a
pre-test, post-test, and follow-up test. An interactive reading was implemented for 3
weeks. The findings provide important insights into the effectiveness of the IR process
on students reading ability from the results of the pre-test, post-test, and follow-up test.
This study proved that the IR approach was practical and effective in improving the
university students reading ability. To assess reading comprehension, reading
knowledge, reading strategies and correlation of interactive process, reading habits, and
self-actualization, one possible justification is that the IR process can encourage the
students curiosity when reading the passages. Therefore, interactive reading could be
provided as an alternative teaching and learning process to promote interactivity,
examine students reading comprehension and reading knowledge, and find creative
interactivity to encourage students sustained reading skills in the 21st century.
