Abstract:
The purposes of this research were to analyze meanings of : 1) facebook, 2) pressing like button on facebook, 3) pressing comment button on facebook, and 4) pressing share button on facebook in Thai context. This study employed Mixed Method Research. Four Focus Groups with 21 participants who used Facebook at least once per day and had ever used the Like, Love, HaHa, Wow, Angry, Sad, Comment and Share buttons were conducted to find out the meanings of the Facebook and its reaction buttons. Afterward, Quantitative Research with survey method were conducted. The sample sizes of this study were 425 Thai people. Descriptive Statistics such as Frequency, Pecentage, Mean, and Standard Deviation were used to analyze the data The results of the study were as follows: 1. Most of Thai People described Facebook as a Social Watch & Monitoring Space, watching information of society, family, relatives, friends and idols they were interested in) (Mean = 4.04). Secondly, described it as their Memory Storage, keeping photos and posts (Mean = 3.96). Lastly, described it as their Show-Off Space (Mean = 3.00); 2. Thai people translated the meanings of pressing Facebook buttons as a signal of their feelings. The Like button were used to express their emotions in many situations. The research found that pressing Like button can be translated into 42 meanings including 1)like, 2) love (friends, agencies and persons whom their respects), 3) persecute, 4) angry, 5) sympathize, 6) respect, 7) advertize products /service, 8) reserve/ pinpoint, 9) tease, 10) reward, 11) warn, 12) follow, 13) amaze, 14) share, 15) do public relations for services or organization, 16) surprise, 17) private bookmark, 18) disappoint 19) be the same team, 20) more than love, 21) please / excite, 22) congratulate, 23) smile 24) laugh at, 25)be wonderful, 26) beloved (friends, agencies and persons whom their respects), 27) like as a manner, 28) perceive, 29) sad, 30) be closed, 31) build their own images, 32) get what one deserves, 33) regret, 34) comment, 35) pay attention, 36) giggle, 37)find their ally, 38) sweat, 39) cheer up, 40) flatter, 41) throw yourself at someone, and 42) crush on him or her; 3. Thai people gave 22 meanings to pressing Comment button including 1) comment, 2) persecute, 3) angry, 4) sympathize, 5) reserve/pinpoint, 6) tease, 7) warn, 8) like, 9) be the same team, 10) please / excite, 11) congratulate, 12) laugh at, 13) love (friends, agencies and persons whom their respects), 14) like as a manner, 15) perceive, 16) be closed, 17) get what one deserves, 18) regret, 19) pay attention, 20) sweat, 21) cheer up, and 22) flatter; 4. Thai people gave 12 meanings to pressing CShareD button including 1) share, 2) find their ally, 3) respect, 4) advertize products or services, 5) reserve/pinpoint, 6) follow, 7) like, 8) do public relations for products services or organizations, 9) private bookmark, 10) more than like, 11) build their own images, and 12) giggle
