International students' attitudes toward English oral communication with Thai staff at an international college
Abstract:
This study investigated the attitudes of international students toward English oral communication with Thai staff at an international college and explored the kind of problems international students confronted while communicating with Thai staff. In this study, the participants were 155 international students studying at one of the international colleges in Bangkok, Thailand. The participants were classified by their student status, consisting of three categories: full-time, exchange and visiting. The research instrument was a questionnaire containing four main sections. The questionnaire was designed from the framework of several scholars perspectives. The data obtained from the questionnaire were analyzed using IBM SPSS Statistics 23 software in order to find statistical values including the frequency, percentage, mean score, and standard deviation. The findings of the study revealed that the majority of the participants displayed positive attitudes toward English oral communication with Thai staff at an international college. They highly agreed that Thai staff spoke English with international students in a friendly way, used eye contact and were willing to speak English. The results also found that most of the participants moderately agree that they experienced problems about linguistic competence, including pronunciation, vocabulary and grammar. English grammar was the most common problem. On the other hand, the participants did not encounter problems about non-linguistic competence, including English speaking fluency, confidence and eagerness to speak English. Interestingly, the participants suggested ways to solve the problems. Most of them recommended that the international college should provide English courses and some useful activities for Thai staff. The results of the study may be advantageous for the organizations development and staffs English improvement
