Junior staff's motivation in writing business English e-mail in an insurance company
Abstract:
This study aimed to scrutinize factors contributing to AIA junior staffs motivation relating to business English e-mail writing improvement at AIA Co., Ltd. Convenience sampling technique was used to select 60 AIA junior staff. Questionnaires were the research instrument to explore the motivation of the participants. Data were analyzed by SPSS and cross tabulations to identify, describe and explore the types of motivation and factors correlating with the level of motivation of AIA junior staff to improve business English e-mail writing proficiency. The results illustrate that AIA junior staff have slightly more intrinsic motivation than extrinsic motivation. There are four factors which correlate with the staffs motivation, namely gender, age, educational background and years of employment. Crosstab analysis was used in this part to find the correlations. The crosstab results demonstrate that AIA junior staff really want to improve their business English e-mail writing proficiency in the same correlation among age, gender and educational background. However, one interesting factor, correlating with the level of motivation in email writing proficiency in a contradictory way, is years of employment. The correlation between years of employment and intrinsic motivation showed that AIA junior staff who have worked for 10 years and over want to increase self-accomplishment, whereas, the staff who worked 1-3 years reflect extrinsic motivation for showing a better job performance
