Genre analysis of university online overviews: analysis of moves in Japanese university online overviews
Abstract:
To survive in the world of high competitiveness among the higher education institutes, the universities employ many techniques and strategies to meet the students needs. One technique is the university overview which provides the useful information for prospective students. This study is aimed to investigate the rhetorical move structure of university online overviews for the purpose of how this kind of discourse is organised to achieve its purposes. The samples consist of 10 Japanese University online overviews. This current study adopted Yangs (2013) framework to analyse the move structure of university online overviews. The results illustrated that Move 1 (establish a distinguished status), Move 2 (ensure excellent teaching quality), and Move 4 (offer attractive incentives) are the obligatory moves. For the optional moves are Move 3 (present a leading role in research), Move 5 (enjoy a friendly environment), and Move 6 (end with suggestion). Move 1 appears at the beginning the most while the ending move can be any move. Furthermore, most of the Japanese university overviews place weight on Move 3. The findings of this study can apply to the EFL writing course to guide the students to write promotional text. Also, Thai universities are advised to reconstruct their text in the university overviews to be more attractive in order to recruit more students in the competitively globalised higher education market
