An investigation of high school students' English language learning strategies
Abstract:
The importance of English in Thailand is evident by its focus in their education system. This study interviewed grade 10 students at a public school in Thailand using the Strategy Inventory for Language Learning (SILL) questionnaire to assess current students learning strategies. Results indicated highest use of metacognitive and social language learning strategies, respectively. Cognitive and compensation strategies ranked only slightly lower, while memory and affective strategies ranked as the lowest used. Results showed a wide overall use of all strategy groups. Strategies deemed easier were more widely used, whereas more difficult strategies were used less overall. High rankings in metacognitive, social, and cognitive strategies may be attributed to the English programs that the participants attended. High social strategy ranking and low affective strategy ranking may also be a result of cultural components that relate to Thai society
