Abstract:
The objective of this research paper is to study the effects of different fonts of Thai characters on computer screens upon the reading of Pratom Suksa 4 students For this purpose, 6 different styles of the Angsana UPC font have been used. Ltalic, Normal, Condensed, Bold, Outline and Black. The test group used in the research was randomly composed by 90 Pratom Suksa 4 students undertaking their second semester in 1996. The 90 students came from The Demontration School of Chulalongdorn University (Elementary), Phayathai School, Kindergarten school of Samsan College, Rachavinit Pratom School and Phatumwan School. The author created a computer program for testing the degree of legibility styles of Thai character, which was applied as an instrument in the research. All collected data was analyzed by various methods such as One-Way Analysis of Variance, Repeated Measurements, and Multiple Comparisons by means of the Tukey Test method. The major findings of the research are summarized as follows: 1. The degree of legibility in rading ltalic, Normal, Condersed, Bold. Outline and Bloack styles of Thai characters on computer screens by Pratom Suksa 4 students had a significant statistical variance at level 0.05. 2. The Normal style was tegarded more legibal than other styles when read on computer screen by the Pratom Suksa 4 students, The statistical variance was at level 0.05. The legibility of other styles was graded by the sample group in the following order: ltalic, Condersed,, Black, Bold, and Outine.
