A study of total energy expenditure and time spent on daily activities in Thai Adults with sedentary lifestyle
Abstract:
According to globalisation, sedentary behaviour has been increasing, resulting from changing of daily lifestyle. It may contribute to adverse health outcomes. The accurate energy requirement is needed. This study purposes of measuring total energy expenditure (TEE) in sedentary groups separating to 2 subgroups, physically active (sedentary exercisers (SE), n= 15) and physically inactive (couch potato (CP), n=32). TEE was measured by doubly labelled water (2H and 18O2). Urine samples were collected according to the protocol, then Isotope ration of 2H and 18O2 was measured to determine carbon dioxide production and further calculated to TEE. Accelerometer was attached for physical activity measurement. The results reported TEE at 1,898 + 199 kcal/day in SE more than the CP group, TEE was 1,720 + 277 kcal/day. The 11 percent higher in TEE of SE corresponded to a higher in time spent in moderate-vigorous- intensity physical activity in the SE group at 197. 2 + 57. 4 min/week comparing to 17.37 + 3.22 min/week in CP. TEE of sedentary groups found in a range of Thai Dietary Reference Intake, 2020
