Impact of internal migration on children's schooling and child labor : the case of Vietnam

Abstract: As a developing country, internal migration is an inevitable trend in Vietnam. Migration could increase the income of the household and reduce poverty, but it can also cause social issues in both destination and origin. By using pooled data VLSS 2010, 2012 and 2014, this study aims to investigate the impact of internal migration on left-behind children regarding school enrollment and economic activities. With normal OLS and robustness check with IV regression, we found that work migration could increase the likelihood of schooling attendance and the log of education expenditure of family while it is harder to show the evidence of the impact on child labor. The work migration also reduces the number of working hours per day of children. Boys are more likely affected by migration than their female counterparts in term of education attendance, education spending and the number of working hours. To be similar to South Asian countries, it is wide-spread said in Vietnam that “caring for the daughter is like watering the neighbour's tree ; the fruits go to someone else”. Boys would become the primary breadwinners who would support their parents at their old age while their daughters will be absorbed into their husbands' families. Therefore, the returns to investments in sons' education is expected to be higher and the family would invest more in education of their sons than girls. However, boys are also likely to engage in the economic activities if the household gets financial troubles, the reason why boys’ outcomes are more elastic than female ones
