Abstract:
Lignin was recovered from black liquor of the soda process of bagasse pulp by acidification and protonation reactions of carbon dioxide. A semi-batch reactor was designed for gas-liquid reaction to separating lignin from other components in the black liquor. The effect of temperature, pressure, and reaction time on the lignin recovery was investigated by 2-level full factorial. The controlling variables were designed for eight experiments by setting at 40 Celsius degrees and 120 Celsius degrees for temperature, 5 and 8 bar for pressure, and 30 and 120 min for residence time. The results were found that at 120 Celsius degrees, 8 bar, and 120 min in the semi-batch reactor was the properly recovered conditions for lignin recovery of the highest yield of 93.06 percent. Functional groups of lignin were confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). The results confirmed that the lignin was recovered from black liquor by carbon dioxide; however, it was a non-uniform structure.
