Abstract:
Bentonite catalysts loading with Zn, Ni and Fe were synthesized by incipient wetness method for using in pyrolysis of waste engine oil. The amount of metal loading were varies as 1 wt percent, 3 wt percent and 5 wt percent. The mixture of bentonite and each metal was calcined at 400 Celsius degrees for 4 hours before usage. All catalysts were characterized by the following techniques: X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and Energy-Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDX). In addition, the synthesized catalysts were tested in pyrolysis of waste engine oil operated at a certain condition. The percent yields of pyrolysis oil, gas and solid residue were compared. The physical properties and sulfur content of pyrolysis oil were analyzed. The results show that loaded metals were found on the pore surface of bentonite and formed an amorphous structure. The use of metal loaded bentonite catalysts tended to decrease the percent yield of pyrolysis oil. On the other hand, the sulfur content in pyrolysis oil could be reduced from 0.280 wt percent to 0.252 wt percent by using 5 wt percent Zn loaded bentonite catalyst in pyrolysis process of waste engine oil
