Barriers in Thai doctoral music student socialization

Abstract: This research study aims to examine barriers that Thai doctoral music students encounter in doctoral socialization. It leads to the main question: “What are the barriers that Thai doctoral music students encounter in doctoral socialization?” The mixed methods design was employed in this research study. The key instruments used were a semi-structured interview and a survey. The population for the survey were either Thai graduates who had received a doctoral degree in music or doctoral students who were currently studying for a Ph.D. in music at a Thai university during the 2015 academic year. The participants of the interview were drawn from the same quantitative population by using random sampling. There were 12 doctoral students and graduates in four different stages of doctoral education across four Thai universities that have launched Ph.D. programs in music. The results found that barriers in Thai doctoral music student socialization emerged from three segments: 1. Student-related barriers were the barriers that spring from the doctoral students themselves. These barriers happened to students before they entered into the doctoral program. However, they had effects on students' learning and involving in the Ph.D. program. These barriers included background and predispositions, investment (time, money, and energy), personal communities (family, friends, and employers), self-concept, and psychological and physical issues. 2. Barriers of integrating into the doctoral program occurred after doctoral students entered and got involved in the Ph.D. music program. Integrating into the program led many different difficulties including learning, peer climate, relationships with faculty and friends, and dissertation. 3. Institutional barriers appeared from the institutions themselves which affected students in their enrollment in the program. These obstacles covered admission, academic program curriculum, and requirements. This study is beneficial to institutions seeking to adjust their program to help students move through any processes more fluently and effectively. Also, this study will be an advantage to doctoral music students who are either currently studying or planning to apply for doctoral programs. It will help them become well prepared in terms of acquiring the information regarding their confrontations during enrollment in a doctoral program.

Abstract: งานวิจัยนี้ มีจุดมุ่งหมายเพื่อค้นหาอุปสรรคทางสังคมที่เกิดขึ้นในกระบวนการศึกษาระดับปริญญาเอกทางด้านดนตรีของนักศึกษาไทย โดยงานวิจัยนี้เป็นงานวิจัยแบบผสม (Mixed methods) เครื่องมือที่ใช้ในการเก็บข้อมูล ได้แก่ แบบสอบถาม และแบบสัมภาษณ์ โดยประชากรสำหรับงานวิจัยเชิงปริมาณ ได้แก่ นักศึกษาระดับปริญญาเอกด้านดนตรีในประเทศไทย และดุษฎีบัณฑิตที่สำเร็จการศึกษาด้านดนตรี ณ ปีการศึกษา 2558 สำหรับกลุ่มตัวอย่างสำหรับงานวิจัยเชิงคุณภาพนั้นได้จากการสุ่มตัวอย่างจากกลุ่มประชากร โดยมาจากนักศึกษา 4 กลุ่มได้แก่ นักศึกษาระดับปริญญาเอกด้านดนตรีในประเทศไทยที่กำลังศึกษาอยู่ในชั้นปีที่ 1, นักศึกษาที่ศึกษารายวิชาสำเร็จตามโครงสร้างแล้ว, นักศึกษาที่อยู่ในกระบวนการทำดุษฎีนิพนธ์ และดุษฎีบัณฑิตที่สำเร็จการศึกษาด้านดนตรีแล้ว ซึ่งมีจำนวนทั้งหมด 12 คน โดยอุปสรรคที่เกิดขึ้นสามารถสรุป ดังนี้ 1. อุปสรรคที่เกี่ยวข้องกับตัวนักศึกษา เป็นอุปสรรคที่เกิดขึ้นจากตัวนักศึกษาเอง โดยเป็นสิ่งที่เกิดขึ้นก่อนที่นักศึกษาจะเข้าสู่กระบวนการการเรียนในระดับปริญญาเอก แต่ปัจจัยเหล่านี้สามารถส่งผลกระทบต่อการศึกษาได้ ไม่ว่าจะเป็น อุปสรรคจากภูมิหลัง, การทุ่มเททั้งทางด้านเวลา เงิน และพลังงาน, อุปสรรคจากบุคคลต่าง ๆ รอบตัว, ปัจจัยทางด้านตัวเอง (Self-concept), และ อุปสรรคทางด้านจิตวิทยาและทางด้านกายภาพ 2. อุปสรรคอันเกิดจากการที่นักศึกษาเข้ามามีส่วนร่วมในหลักสูตรปริญญาเอก อุปสรรคเหล่านี้เกิดขึ้นภายหลังจากที่นักเรียนผ่านกระบวนการการรับเข้าและได้เข้ามาศึกษาในหลักสูตร โดยการเข้าสู่หลักสูตรนั่นสามารถเกิดอุปสรรคได้มากมาย ได้แก่ อุปสรรคทางด้านการเรียน, เพื่อนร่วมชั้น, การปฏิสัมพันธ์กับอาจารย์และเพื่อน, และอุปสรรคที่เกิดจากกระบวนการทำดุษฎีนิพนธ์ 3. อุปสรรคจากสถาบัน เป็นอุปสรรคที่เกิดขึ้นจากสถาบันเอง ซึ่งเป็นสิ่งที่นักศึกษาไม่สามารถควบคุมได้ ได้แก่ กระบวนการการรับนักศึกษา, หลักสูตรและแผนการเรียน, และข้อกำหนดและข้อบังคับต่าง ๆ
