Preparation of Phosphotungstic acid/ silica supported catalyst for esterification reaction
Abstract:
This research aimed to prepare phosphotungstic acid (H3PW12O40, PTA) catalyst supported on silica for esterification. Firstly, PTA was synthesized from the precipitation between WO42- and Na2HPO4 with adjusting pH by HCl solution. The PTA/SiO2 supported catalysts were prepared by spray impregnation. Various factors to examine the conversion of acetic acid, there were 2 percent PTA/SiO2, 5 percent PTA/SiO2, 10 percent PTA/SiO2. All catalysts had been characterized by particle size analyzer, N2 adsorption, SEM-EDS, XRD and Hammett indicator, consecutively. Applying 60 Celsius degrees, 120 min. for all reactions, the reactant mixture was equimolar of acetic acid: ethanol. Using 1 g 10 percent PTA/SiO2 catalyst, it gave the highest conversion equal to 9.5 percent conversion among PTA/SiO2 supported catalysts. Compared to 1 g PTA unsupported one, it had conversion of 23.4 percent. After analysis of reacted acetic acid per active site as turnover number (TON), it indicated that 10 percent PTA/SiO2 catalyst had TON = 2.25x105 while PTA with TON = 1.92x104 and it showed 11.7 times higher than PTA unsupported one. This contributed on PTA deposition as W species on SiO2 support. Additionally, the SiO2 support also suppressed the active sites of PTA dissolution. The PTA/SiO2 supported catalyst and the unsupported one had pH 4.2 and pH 3.0, respectively. This method achieved to prepare PTA supported catalyst and to catalyze esterification
