Comparison of incobotulinum toxin a versus onabotulinumtoxin a in the treatment of contouring trapezius hypertrophy
Abstract:
Background: There were a few reports of lower efficacy of Incobotulinum Toxin A compare to Onabotulinumtoxin A
Objectives: To compare the efficacy Incobotulinum Toxin A and Onabotulinumtoxin A for the treatment of trapezius hypertrophy.
Methods: A randomized, double-blind clinical trial was performed. 20 Thai subjects aged between 20-45 years old, with trapezius hypertrophy and need to minimize the size of shoulders muscle to make the neck look longer and thinner as well as to make the collarbones stand out were randomly assigned treatment with Incobotulinum Toxin A 30 units and Onabotulinumtoxin A 30 units injected on each trapezius muscle. Six points of injection were designed for the trapezius along an imaginary line from the 7th cervical spine to the acromion process and divided into three parts. Subsequently, six points of injection were performed in the middle part to avoid accessory nerve damage, which aligned in the middle. At each follow-up visit at days 60, the patient was photographed and trapezius size was measured by a researcher at the same point of measurement. Further, Ultrasonography was taken at day 60 to compare the thickness of the trapezius to day 0.
Results: Twenty volunteers completed the study. The result from ultrasonography of the trapezius thickness was 9.66±2.07mm before Onabotulinumtoxin A injection and 7.35±1.11mm after injection. Further, trapezius thickness before Incobotulinum Toxin A injection was 9.63±1.58 mm and 7.33±1.21mm after injection. Paired differences of mean for trapezius thickness decreased after both botulinum toxin injections with no apparent statistical difference.
Conclusion: Incobotulinum Toxin A is equally as effective as Onabotulinumtoxin A for trapezius reduction.
