Thermodynamic analysis of hydrogen production from butanol autothermal reforming
Abstract:
In this work, the thermodynamics analysis of hydrogen production from butanol autothermal reforming was studied using a Gibbs free energy minimization method under the range of temperatures between 300 and 1100 Celsius degrees, steam to butanol molar feed ratios of 0-12 and oxygen to butanol feed ratios of 0-6. The results showed that the most favorable conditions for hydrogen production can be achieved at temperature of 700-800 Celsius degrees, steam to butanol molar feed ratios of 9-12 and oxygen to butanol feed ratios of 1.5-3. Furthermore, it was demonstrated that the thermoneutral condition for steam to butanol feed ratios of 9-12 can be obtained at oxygen to butanol feed ratios of 2.70-2.80 at 700 Celsius degrees and 2.65-2.75 at 800 Celsius degrees, respectively. Under these thermoneutral conditions, the maximum hydrogen yield was 5.56 at 700 Celsius degrees and 5.33 at 800 Celsius degrees with steam to butanol feed ratio of 12; moreover, the carbon formation and methane generation were relatively low.
