Evaluation of the effect of die modification of the stamping die during the die buy-off
Abstract:
Die buy-off is an important process for the automotive industry to acquire forming dies used in production. During this process, the customer will have to evaluate whether forming dies which is built by a die manufacturer can produce parts within product specification and tolerance. Presently, Most of the automotive manufacturers employ Finite Element Modeling (FEM) to design their forming die as a results the number of trial-and-error for the prototypes is significantly reduced. However, the simulation is based on an ideal condition, so in reality some parameters, such as tribology, forming machine and many, may cause some discrepancy during the die tryout. This research presents to methodology to evaluate the effect of the die modification on the spring-go during the die tryout. The simulation was employed to study the effect of the die modification the stress-strain patterns, die shape and drawbead modification. However, in order to ensure that the simulation used in the study was reliable, the simulation modeling had to be verified with the experimental results. The results indicated that the technique employed in the study was able to evaluate the accuracy of the simulation in order to construct the reliable simulation modeling to investigate the effect of the die modification on the spring-go. The drawbead modification had significant effect on the stress distribution of the part than that of the shape modification. Therefore, in this case, the drawbead should be modified first rather than modify both die shape and drawbead. The use of inverse double drawbead to stretch the material at the flange area rather than at the part wall.
