Simulation and Optimization of Isolated Hybrid Power System for Islands in Thailand
Abstract:
This thesis focuses on the development of new approach for the simulation and
optimization problems of stand alone hybrid power system. By taking into account the
interactions between system costs and pollutants emissions, this yields an optimal
system configuration for given requirements. The study has been conducted in three
parts
The first part deals with the modeling and simulating of a stand alone hybrid power
system (SAHPS). In this research, developments of the SAHPS component models are
sufficiently accurate to perform short-term system simulation study, while all of the
models are more than accurate enough to perform optimizations. The comparative
model was under taken using TRNSYS 16. To verify the system component models, an
existing PVIwindldiesel hybrid power system at Koh Chik village, Thailand, was
selected as a reference system, and the monitored results were compared with the
simulated results. The modeling, testing, and verifying of the component models shows
that the agreement between simulated and measured data is very good. The correlation
approach model is sufficiently accurate to perform long term SAHPS simulations,
provided that the parameters have been properly adjusted
The second part deals with a technique on how to optimize the configuration of a typical
stand alone hybrid power system including single and multi objective optimization. The
objective function is evaluated using TRNSYS 16 in assistance with the GenOpt
optimization program. The result shows that The PSO on mesh algorithm achieves the
best solution but required a few seconds to give the above results (where the number of
generations in the algorithm is 52). The algorithm results are also compared with other
approaches. It is found that the recommended designs and the calculated costs by the
algorithm are realistic
Finally; this dissertation is aimed at pre-feasibility study on electrification option for 3
remote communities on Andaman sea of Thailand using the developed method. This
study is broken into 3 remote communities, first for Koh Mak Noi village in Phang Nga
province, second for Koh Po village in Krabi province and third for Tarutao National
Park headquarters in Satun province. The results indicate that electricity demand in all
communities could be met at considerable overall cost savings with a hybrid power
system compared to existing system (solar home systems or separate small diesel
generator)
It is thus believed that the current method would decrease the time required by design
engineers to find the optimal solution. Additionally, this optimization method uses
heuristic algorithms that do not require any vector gradient calculations. Therefore, the
hybrid power system can be modeled with a high degree of accuracy, while still keeping
computation time at an acceptable level
