Prevalence and factors associated with needle stick injuries among nursing students in Henan province, China

Abstract: Needle stick injury (NSI) is a common occupational injury for nursing students, which exposes nursing students to the risk of being infected by blood-borne diseases. Objective: This study aimed to determine the prevalence and factors associated with NSIs among nursing students in Henan province, China. Methods: Cross-sectional study was used to collect the NSIs of 400 nursing students in 7 nursing education institutions in Henan Province. Stratified random sampling was used to determine the study sites and simple random sampling was used to select samples. The research instrument used the structured questionnaire designed by the researcher following the prevention NSIs guidelines from WHO and US CDC. The validity of the research instrument was tested by 3 experts and IOC score for each item was found to be more than 0.5. Reliability was test by Cronbach's alpha and the result value was 0.78. Binary and multiple logistic regression was used to analyze the factors of NSIs. Data collection were collected from study sites from May to August 2019. Results: A total of 258 (67%) nursing students had NSIs during the internship. Gender (aOR 2.9, 95% CI, 1.1 – 7.9), education (aOR 2.5, 95% CI, 1.1 – 6.3) knowledge of needle stick injury prevention (aOR 2.8, 95% CI, 1.6 – 4.8), attitude of needle stick injury prevention (aOR 9.0, 95% CI, 3.5 – 23.3) and the trainings and courses of needle stick injury prevention (aOR 2.5, 95% CI, 1.1 – 6.0) were found to be significantly associated with NSIs. Conclusions: Among nursing students in Henan Province, NSIs are widespread, and public health agencies need long-term epidemiological testing. Nursing students should strict for the guideline of needle stick injury prevention and improve their knowledge and attitude of needle stick injury prevention. Nursing education institutions should also strengthen education and curriculum training for occupational safety among nursing students. Government departments and medical institutions should develop relevant policies and guidelines for needle stick injury prevention.
