Development of an adaptive web-based learning environment based on a formative assessment approach
Abstract:
A formative assessment strategy has made provisions for students in monitoring their ongoing learning status, providing feedback, and adapting the instruction to meet learning requirement. Consequently, in this study, it was applied to develop an online learning support system. Two empirical studies were conducted in this research. In the first study, a web-based learning support system was developed by following four important approaches: (1) the testing and diagnosing conceptual learning problem approach for providing remedial learning paths; (2) the learning style identification approach for suggesting appropriate layout of learning material; (3) the formative assessment-based approach for monitoring learning progression and adapting learning activities; and (4) the guided inquiry-based learning approach for fostering knowledge construction. The value of the first study revealed improvement in the students learning achievement and learning attitudes. Moreover, the second study was conducted to investigate the factors affecting students learning performance on the proposed system. Corresponding conceptual model, thus, was developed and validated to test the hypotheses in the structural model. Research findings on these two studies offered a valuable contribution to enhance the development of an online adaptive learning environment for e-learning researchers and teachers.
