Preference of light distribution and colour temperature of 2 age groups in residential space
Abstract:
This study investigated the preference of light distribution and colour temperature inresidential interiors of 2 age groups.
Five light distributions typically used in residential interiors: direct downward lighting with linear sources and with point sources,
indirect peripheral cove lighting, indirect centre cove lighting and mixed indirect centre cove lighting with direct down-lights were selected.
Cool colour temperature of 4,000 K and warm colour temperature of 2,500 K-3,000 K were used in the study.
Ascaled-model(I:20) with different ceiling layouts was used to simulate 11 lighting installations.
There were 73 subjects participated in the study; the younger subjects (38 persons) aged between 18-39 years old and the older subjects (35 persons) aged between 40-65
years old. The subjects were asked to view each of the lighting installation and to rate
their responses on the semantic differential scales. Five subjective responses included
preference, comfort, relaxation, friendliness and brightness; the results were analyzed
using a statistical package SPSS. It was found that:
1. The indirect peripheral and centre cove lighting mixed with direct downlights
seem to be the most preferred light distributions for both age groups.
2. Lighting installations with warm colour temperature appear to be more
preferable than those with cool colour temperature for both age groups.
3. In most cases, there seem to be inter-relationship between the preference and
the perceived comfort, relaxation, friendliness and brightness of the lighting
installations for both age groups.
4. The significant different between the subjective perception of the young and
old adults were found on certain lighting installations and subjective responses only.
Most notably is the difference between the preference, the perceived comfort, relaxation
and friendliness of the area cove light in cool-white mixed with downlights, which the
old adults seemed to perceive it more positive than the young ones.
