Survivability Design for Cellular Wireless Backhaul Network using Genetic Algorithm
Abstract:
In this thesis, we present a cellular wireless network topology design for reliability by
considering network link restoration, and path restoration. This is to provide a back up
path for any single link or path failure in a traditional network design with tree
topology, so that a network link or path failure can no longer interrupt the network
services and causes the network to fail. As a consequence, the network link restoration
and path restoration approaches can greatly enhance the network reliability and quality
of services. We adopt a two-phase network design approach. The first phase provides a
minimum-cost initial network design. The problem is to find a minimum-cost network
topology which includes selecting the location and type of base station controllers and
mobile switching controllers as well as their link types. In the second phase, we provide
a network (link or path) restoration mechanism to the minimum cost network topology
from phase one in order to improve network reliability. In the link restoration, any
single link from existing network or minimum cost network design from initial network
design in phase one will be protected with alternate route between two ends. For
network path restoration, a path with multiple links between source and destination
nodes will have a disjoint backup path. We apply a Genetic Algorithm (GA) to
minimize the cost of the design problem, including the cost of network links,
equipments and their installation. The GA is used as a meta-heuristic technique for
obtaining good solutions for various sizes of network design problem. The simulation
results are evaluated with those from a brute force search algorithm.
