Abstract:
In this work, batch ultrafiltration was employed for concentrating oflignin in black liquor from sodaprocess pulping plant of Eucalyptus. The membranes used were polyethersulfone of MWCO 5 kDa
and regenerated cellulose ofMWCO 10 kDa and 30 kDa. Under constant pressure conditions, it was found that the permeation flux of YM30 was higher than YM10 and PM5 in the initial period of
operation. The permeation flux decreased after a long time of operation. Trans membrane pressure affected the flux in the initial period of operation due to increasing driving force. After that the
effect of pressure was negligible. The analysis of transport resistances using resistance-in-series model showed that the total and polarization resistances were high and increased with time. Fouling
resistance was low and hardly changed. The relationship between flux and logarithmic of concentration followed gel polarization model. The concentrations of lignin in the gel layer for the
membranes PM5, YMIO and YM30 were 210.92-278.77, 273.12-355.45 and 299.83-311.68 gIL, respectively. The concentration of lignin in the retentate and the rejection increased with pressure.
The membrane YMIO was most suitable and gave the lignin rejection of71.37 percent.
