Abstract:
This research examined to study two parts of students utilization of social
networks: reasons of students use of a social network, and the social network
utilization behavior of students. Also, examining the reasons and usage of social
network according to gender and hometown location differences. The samples were 200
students randomly selected from the population of undergraduate student at Faculty of
Education, Burapha University, who studied in the first semester of the 2014 academic
year. This study employed quantitative survey research to collect data. The results were
analyzed by using the frequency and percentage.
The results showed that top five reasons that first year students use of social
networks were: playing games (78%), keeping in touch with friends and family (66%),
meeting new people (59%), sharing their status and gossip with friends (52%),
discovering new music, books, films, and other entertainment (50%), respectively.
For social network utilization behavior of the students, the results indicated that there
was almost half of students those used social network every day for 3-5hours, most
students used social network after class for chatting and playing games, almost half of
the students thought they could get a lot of useful learning material from a social
network. There were 61% of students agreed that a social network helped promote
relationships between their friends and them, and 60% of students confirmed that they
had met friends who later became a real friend. Most students had privacy protection;
they were willing to share basic information, such as birthdate, real name, education,
and photos. Most of the students (80%) were vulnerable to getting negative impact
from social networks.
