Depositional system and sequence stratigraphic analysis of east andaman basin
Abstract:
This research applies seismic stratigraphic principles to understand the
depositional units in the East Andaman Basin situated at the Andaman Sea using
regional 2D data. This Basin is a complex backarc extensional system, lying along a
highly oblique convergent margin attributed to the subduction of Australian and Indian
plates beneath the Sunda plate (previously called SE Asian plate) during the Cenozoic.
The East Andaman Basin extends from the Gulf of Mottama (Martaban) to the Mergui
Basin towards south. Sediment deposited in this basin during the late Miocene-Pliocene
is primarily sourced from the Ayeyarwady and the Salween rivers in the Gulf of
Mottama. Prior to that time, the sediment source area was primarily from the east. Synrift and the post rift are present on 2D seismic sections. The syn-rift phase was active
from Oligocene to Early Miocene (or Eocene to Early Middle Miocene). The post-rift
phase deposited during the Middle Miocene to Recent. The regional scale subsidence
might be the coeval event to the sea-floor spreading in the Andaman Sea, attributed to
relative sea level rise and sediment deposition dominated by thick transgressive
packages during the Middle Miocene to Upper Miocene developed along the basin side.
This sediment was supplied from Ayerwaddy and Salween rivers from the north
(Myanmar). On the other side huge progradingclionoforms indicate rapid westward
deposition during Upper Miocene from the shelf area along the eastern boundary of the
study area (Peninsular Thailand). The shelf slope deposits show significant similarity
g
with Vails classic model depicting prograding clinoforms, canyon fills, and channellevee complex indicated by gull-wing structures and basin floor fan. Based on these
observations, a conceptual stratigraphic model along with a chronostratigraphic chart
has been proposed for the post-rift section continued through Middle Miocene to
Recent.
