Factors associated with rabies antibody titer of vaccinated dogs in Kathmandu Valley, Nepal

Abstract: Rabies has long been a disease associated closely with the rural poor. In Nepal, dogs are the principle vector for the transmission of this disease in urban areas, with vaccination being the most important preventive measure. Until now, no study had been carried out to evaluate the efficacy of vaccination programs and to determine whether factors such as breed of dog, age at vaccination, size of dog, vaccine used, interval between vaccinations and blood sample collection have any influence on the antibody response. Blood samples were collected from 110 vaccinated household dogs in Kathmandu, Bhaktapur, and Lalitpur districts of Nepal. The samples were processed using an indirect immune-enzymatic assay (PlateliaTM Rabies II kit ad usum Veterinarium, Biorad, China) for the detection of rabies virus anti-glycoprotein antibodies in the dog serum samples. We found a high level of rabies antibody titer (89.09%) in vaccinated pet dogs in Kathmandu Valley. The results suggest that there was a good coverage of vaccination in the pet dogs. Only one factor, the conditions under which the dog was kept, had an association with the antibody titer level. This research also studied the awareness and practices in dog owners. A structured questionnaire was used to gather information regarding rabies awareness and practices in pet owners. We observed a high level of awareness amongst the dog owners. All the interviewee had heard about rabies, knew that it is zoonotic and that vaccination is the most important preventive measure. Everyone approved of vaccination of their dogs. The high level of awareness in this area may result from the fact that only dog owners were included in the study. However, it is necessary for an active surveillance system in dog population, dog registration process before and after vaccination campaign and a multi-dimensional approach in all the stake holders for successful control and elimination of this deadly disease in both dogs and humans.
