Abstract:
This paper analyses the relationship between electricity consumption and economic factors of the CLMV countries (Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, and Vietnam) over the period of 2000 to 2015. The variables used in the study are electric power consumption, consumer price index, trade openness, population growth, and gross domestic product per capita. Panel unit root test was used to verify for non-stationary panels. The panel ARDL model (PMG, MG, and DFE) was then applied to estimate the relation between electricity consumption and economic factors. The results of the PMG, MG, and DFE show that a one dollar (US) increase in per capita GDP increases consumption of the electricity in the long run. The long term result of the PMG shows that 1% decrease in the price of electricity increases the electricity consumption by 0.33%. The short term result of the PMG indicates that a 1% increase in population growth increases electricity consumption by 0.071%. The short term results of the MG and DFE conclude that consumer price index, trade openness, population growth, and GDP per capita are not significantly related to the electricity consumption of the CLMV countries over the period of 2000-2015. Also, the study applied the Hausman test to specify an appropriated estimator. The Hausman test confirms that the MG is the most suitable estimator for the data.
