Abstract:
Activated carbons were prepared from coffee husks by chemical activation with
phosphoric acid. The coffee husks were impregnated by phosphoric acid with different
concentrations of 25, 50 and 75%v/v for 2 hours. The samples were characterized by fouriertransform
infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), thermogravimetric and differential thermal analysis
(TG-DTA) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) techniques. Characterization of
activated carbons including ash, moisture, fixed carbon contents, iodine number and point of
zero charge (PZC) was also performed. The thermal decomposition was observed above
550°C, indicating that a temperature of 550°C could be chosen for carbonization temperature
of the activated carbon. FT-IR results showed the characteristic band peaks of hydroxyl,
phosphate and carbonyl/carboxyl groups. The surface morphologies of all samples were
similar that exhibited the heterogeneous surfaces with pore sizes of 50-100 nm. The coffee
husk impregnated by phosphoric acid concentration of 75%v/v had good qualities with the
highest iodine number of 822.28 mg/g, high fixed carbon content of 51.72% and low the
moisture content of 6.35%, which was used as an activated carbon.
