Abstract:
In the search for a highly soluble indigo derivative, we have combined an indigo
molecule, which is an industrially important and readily available chromophore, with a
primary alkylamino unit. The target dye was prepared from condensation of indigo with 4-
(octyloxy)aniline in the presence of TiCl4/DABCO, leading to desirable (2E,3E,3E)-N3,N3-
bis(4-(octyloxy)phenyl)-[2,2-biindolinylidene]-3,3-diimine as a redish brown gummy solid
in 20% yield. In its 1H-nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectrum, multiplet signals of
alkyl chains and aromatic rings was observed at δ 1.002.00 ppm and 6.008.00 ppm,
respectively. Its high resolution mass spectrum exhibited a molecular ion peak at m/z
667.4011. Based on UV-visible spectrophotometry, a solution of the target dye in toluene
gave an absorption maximum at 675 nm. The target dye was found to be highly soluble in
gasoline, diesel and common organic solvents, such as dichloromethane, hexane and
methanol. The potential use of this dye as a colorant and a marker is currently under
investigation.
