Abstract:
This research aimed to increase efficiency of packaging process of beverage power packets by reducing time to change the product model using SMED technique of the manufacture company of beverage power packets. The company had two major products, that is, instant coffee and instant malt powder. Because the company used the same machine to manufacture the two products, changing the product model is a required process for the company. The average time to change the product model was 1,480 minutes per month. Changing the product model focused on cleaning the machine and the two parts of manufacture system, i.e., power distribution part and powder packaging part. Cleaning is considered an important process and unstandardized cleaning directly affected the product quality or the product flavor. This research only focused on the powder packaging part because powder packaging part took long time for cleaning about 590 minutes per time or 79.73 percent of the cleaning process. Applying SMED technique to improve the part assembly stage by changing from the internal set-up to the external set-up could reduce time of the part assembly stage from 140 minutes to 73.54 minutes. Moreover, applying the industrial engineering techniques, i.e., waste analysis technique and ECRS technique to improve the cleaning stage by appropriately dividing working proportion of cleaning personnel and determining the sequence of cleaning stage of the personnel through the work instruction could reduce time of the cleaning stage from 179 minutes to 137 minutes. The improvement result could be concluded that SMED technique and the industrial engineering techniques could reduce time to change the product model from 740 minutes per time to 631.54 minutes per time or reduce 108.06 minutes or 14.61 percent.
