Abstract:
Spring onion is an economic crop that generates income for farmers in Nakhon Phanom province. Nowadays, the farmers are dealing with its high investment cost. This research aimed not only to study the supply chain and logistics activities of this cultivation from upstream to downstream but also to analyze the logistics cost invested by farmers in Nakhon Phanom Province in order to provide a guideline for logistics cost reduction.
The research instruments consisted of a questionnaire and an interview conducted to a population of 290 farmers in two districts, each with two sub-districts involved; Don Kwang and Ban Klang of Maung, and San Pan and Kud Chim of That Phanom. The samples were chosen from Craig and Morgan Table with 95% confidence level. Then, The different types of logistics cost were analyzed by activity-based costing system for the average actual costs before providing a guideline for logistics cost reduction.
The results showed that the logistics cost incurred in the supply chain of this cultivation was composed of quantity, transportation, inventory, and information system cost. Considering costing analysis, it revealed that farmers had an average logistics cost of 27,889 baht per rai. The highest cost was on quantity of its breeds purchased at 10,752 baht per rai. The next cost depended on agricultural tools and equipment purchased at 5,488 baht per rai while the cost of land rent was 3,750 baht per rai. Therefore, The logistics cost reduction guideline should be focused on proper procurement and onion breeds preparation.
