Abstract:
This study aimed to evaluate the implementation effectiveness of tobacco advertisement and sales promotion at the point of sale in retail stores in Bangkok according to the tobacco product control act, 2535 B.E. Data were collected by observation at retail shops and through a questionnaire with a sample of 200 cigarette distributors. The statistical method used in analysis was chi-square. The results showed that the highest score was on knowledge about cigarettes, tobacco, nicotine gum which is classified as a tobacco product, and Krongthip, Saifon, and Marlboro cigarette brands. The second highest score on knowledge is regarding a law which is used to control advertising and promotion of cigarettes at the point of sale. The attitude toward the law score was at a moderate level. Practicing the law which is used to control advertising and promotion of cigarettes at the point of sale was 42 percent. Correlation analysis indicated that the revenue from cigarette sales, receiving guidance/instructions by the cigarette companies regarding showing the cigarettes in the display window at eye level, and recognition of information through shop media, are correlated to the implementation effectiveness of tobacco advertisement and sales promotion product control act. From inquiry, it was found that the form of advertising and promotion used the most in the retail shops was selling individual cigarettes from a pack. From observation, the researcher found many stores (29%) had small signs which read Cigarettes sold here on the cabinet where cigarettes were displayed. Second most observed were stores with paper signs (size A4 or smaller) with the message Cigarettes sold here in black or blue letters on a white background (25%) in various places. The recommendation is to strictly enforce the law which is used to control advertising and promotion of cigarettes at the point of sale under the Tobacco Products Control Act (2535).
