Abstract:
The pulp mill effluents are black (Black liquor) which are not allowed to release into
natural resources. Therefore, color and furfural compound must be eliminated. In this study, a
biological treatment by the white rot fungi Sporotrichum pulverulentum was investigated.
The fungus was cultured in the black liquor at concentrations of 2%, 4% and 6% (v/v), with
and without potato dextrose broth (PDB) basal medium. The cultures were incubated under
shaking condition at 200 rpm, temperature 33 ºC, and initial pH 6.8 for 96 hours. The results
showed statistically significant (p<0.01), that the treatment of 6% (v/v) black liquor
concentration with basal medium was reduced the best color and furfural compound of
74.35±0.52% and 65.82±7.00%, respectively, after 48 hours incubation. The results indicate
that this fungus could be used to treat the effluent effectively.
