Pyrolysis of waste palm oil from empty fruit bunch on coal fly ash catalyst
Abstract:
This research aims to study pyrolysis of waste oil from empty fruit bunch on coal fly ash (CFA). The reaction was carried out in a batch micro reactor of 70 ml by using CFA as a catalyst. CFA was calcined at a temperature of 600 Celsius degrees for 5 hours. A full factorial design of four factors such as pyrolysis temperature of 420-450 Celsius degrees, reaction time at 30-60 min, the amount of catalyst 1-5wt. percent (by weight of waste oil) and a hydrogen pressure of 1-5 bar was applied to this study. The responses analyzed were the yield of liquid product and diesel fuel fraction in the liquid product. Statistical analysis was performed to investigate influencing factors in the responses and to determine the optimum condition. The compositions of liquid product were analyzed by distillation simulation gas chromatography and gas chromatography mass spectrometry respectively. The increase in temperature, time and hydrogen affect to the decrease in liquid and diesel yield, while 1 percent wt. of catalyst gave the highest fraction. The optimum condition from the design-expert program shown that pyrolysis temperature of 420 Celsius degrees, reaction time at 30 min, the amount of catalyst 1 wt. percent and a hydrogen pressure of 1 bar which gave the highest liquid fraction of 87.96 wt. percent and diesel faction of 42.27 wt. percent.
