Abstract:
The crystallization and melting behaviors of poly(L-lactic acid) (PLLA), polybutylene succinate (PBS) and their blends were characterized using conventional differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and temperature-modulated DSC (TMDSC). The two distinguished melting peaks (Tm) of PLLA (165.8 Celsius degrees) and PBS (114.4 Celsius degrees) components in the blends were clearly observed by both techniques, demonstrating that both components are immiscible. The results from TMDSC analysis revealed that the cold-crystallization of PLLA originated mostly from amorphous state while the cold-crystallization of PBS initiated from the partial melting and simultaneous re-crystallization of original PBS crystals that existed in the molded sample. The results from TMDSC analysis revealed the overlapped cold-crystallization of PLLA and PBS amorphous phase around 90.5 Celsius degrees, followed by the melting of the PBS crystals formed through the cold-crystallization process (114.4 Celsius degrees). The cold-crystallization of PLLA then occurred (151.4 Celsius degrees), prior to the re-melting of the PLLA crystals at higher melting temperature (165.8 Celsius degrees). This melting, re-crystallization and re-melting (MRR) process occurred simultaneously during TMDSC measurement
