Application of amine-functionalized TiO2 wrapped in reduced graphene oxide wrapped in photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue
Abstract:
In this work, titanium dioxide (TiO2) was synthesized via a sol-gel method and its surface was then modified with 3-aminopropyltrimethoxysilane. After that, the amine-functionalized TiO2 particles was wrapped with sheets of graphene oxide (GO). Next, the reduction of GO to rGO was carried out using the volumetric ratio of deionized water hydrazine ammonia of 500 to 0.5 to 3.5. For a photocatalytic reaction, an aqueous solution of 10 mg per L methylene blue and 0.4 g of TiO2 per rGO photocatalyst were placed in a 400 mL glass reactor. The suspension was kept in the darkness while being stirred for 1 hour. Then the reactor was irradiated by either for 75W UV-C lamp or 18W visible light lamp for 3 hours. The concentration of methylene blue was measured at every 15 minutes using an ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometer. The TiO2 per rGO with a weight ratio of 1 to 0.04 had the highest conversions of methylene blue degradation under both ultraviolet light (69.47 percent) and visible light (29.96 percent). The resulting conversions of methylene blue degradation over various TiO2 per rGO were in agreement with the results of photoluminescence and ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometry. When GO was reduced to rGO, the separation of photogenerated electrons and holes was enhanced. As a result, the photocatalytic activity of the rGO-wrapped TiO2
