Abstract:
This classroom-based research study was conducted to investigate if aCode-breaking game used as a warm-up activity can help raise the students'awareness of spelling conventions.The subjects in the experiment comprised 51 students of M. 413 at IsalamicCollege of Thailand. The instruments used for data collection were a pre- and posttest,student diaries, a teacher's diary and pre- and post-questionnaires.In this experiment, Code-breaking games were used as warm-up activities.The result of this study reveals that Code-breaking game helps raise the students'awareness of spelling conventions. It was also found that the subjects have positiveattitudes towards the use of Code-breaking game and towards the game itself.Furthermore, the Code-breaking game helps the students understand Englishspelling conventions. The students are able to use spelling conventions in writingEnglish vocabulary. They are able to recognise vocabulary better and faster. Theyare able to use spelling conventions to guess the words correctly. They are also ableto guess unknown words spelled with similar conventions.The students regard the Code-breaking game as an enjoyable, challenging,interesting and useful activity that enhances vocabulary learning. Moreover, the9 Code-breaking game as a warm-up activity motivates the students in languagelearning by preparing them to learn English vocabulary in the main lesson andpreparing them to study the main lesson. They also feel more confident in learningthe main lesson.
