Abstract:
Esterification of acetic acid with ethanol using activated acidic aluminum oxide as a solid catalyst is investigated in this study. The experiments were conducted in a stirred batch reactor at a pressure of 500 psig. The amount of catalyst by weight of acetic acid, the molar ratio of acetic acid to ethanol and reaction temperature of 100-180 degree Celsius were studied. The experimental results demonstrated that acidic aluminum oxide can be used effectively as a catalyst in the esterification reaction of acetic acid and ethanol. The conversion of acetic acid increases with increasing amounts of catalyst in the molar ratio of acetic acid to ethanol and reaction temperature
