Effect of TiO2 polymorphs on the catalytic properties of Pt/TiO2 in the selective hydrogenation of furfural to furfuryl alcohol
Abstract:
Furfural is a biochemical derived from lignocellulosic biomass and furfuryl alcohol is an important industrial chemical intermediate for the manufacturing of many chemical products such as furan resin, lysine, and vitamin C. In the present study, selective hydrogenation of furfural to furfuryl alcohol was carried out in a batch reactor 50 Celsius degrees, 20 bar H2 using 0.5 wt Pt TiO2 with methanol as a solvent. The Pt TiO2 catalysts were prepared by the incipient wetness impregnation on different TiO2 polymorphs. Under the reaction conditions used, the Pt TiO2-P25 exhibited the highest furfural conversion at 81 percent with FA selectivity 98 percent after 2 h reaction time. The catalyst properties were correlated to the structural properties of the catalysts such as Pt dispersion and Pt-TiO2 interaction induced by different TiO2 polymorphs as characterized by X-ray diffraction, N2-physisorption, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, H2-temperature programmed reduction and Transmission electron spectroscopy
