Abstract:
Artemisia lactiflora (AL) is a medicinal plant that is found to have a broad pharmacological effects including antioxidant activities. Antioxidant activities of this plant is obtained by the presence of two constituents, phenolic and flavonoid compounds. AL has the potential to be used as an ingredient in skin care products. In this study, the effect of extraction solvents were evaluated. The total phenolic compounds (TPC) was determined by Folin-Ciocalteu method. Total flavonoid contents (TFC) were analyzed by aluminum chloride colorimetric method. Antioxidant activities of AL extract were investigated using DPPH radical scavenging activity and ferric reducing power (FRAP). The obtained extract was further added into the serum formulation. The stability of this serum was studied in the accelerated condition by heat-cool cycle method. Consumer satisfaction was also evaluated by using the 7-point Hedonic scale. The results showed that the AL extract with water (JW) had the highest TPC and TFC, 394.82 ± 32.64 microgram gallic acid equivalent/milliliter (µg GAE/ml) and 295.73 ± 3.05 microgram catechin equivalent/milliliter (µg CE/ml) respectively. It was found that the AL ethanolic extracts (JE) had the highest DPPH antioxidant activity of 148.47 ± 0.19 microgram ascorbic acid equivalent/milliliter (µg AAE / ml). The FRAP values showed JW and JE with the highest FRAP value of 143.79 ± 7.17 microgram ascorbic acid equivalent/milliliter and 157.53 ± 4.39 microgram ascorbic acid equivalent/milliliter, respectively. JW was selected to be formulated in to a serum at a in the range of 10 to 30 % w/w. The results showed that all serum formulations were stable. There were also no changed in TPC and pH value. However, the color stability found that the formula with 30% w/w JW extract had the highest color change. For consumer satisfaction test, consumer showed slightly to moderate preference to the serum (5.80 ± 0.70 to 5.85 ± 1.14). In conclusion, results from this study indicated that Artemisia lactiflora (AL) is a potent plant that can be used as an ingredient in skin care products.
