Topical Tretinoin is an effective treatment for wrinkles, but their use is limited because of burning, stinging, redness, photosensitivity, skin dryness and peeling. Jasmine rice known as Thailands economic crops. Resent study shows efficacy of phenolic compounds improve wrinkles, brighten up skin, improve skin hydration, and improve skin tightening on inner forearm. However, there is no study comparison an efficacy and safety between 0.1% jasmine rice extract cream and 0.025% tretinoin cream for the treatment of periorbital wrinkles.
Objective: To compare efficacy of topical 0.1% Jasmine rice extract versus topical 0.025% tretinoin in the treatment of periorbital wrinkles
Methods: The study was designed as double-blind, randomized and controlled clinical trial. A 30 patients (10 males and 20 females; age 40 to 70 years) with signs of periorbital wrinkles level I-V (Lemperle Scale) were enrolled. The patients were randomly selected for application of either 0.1% jasmine rice extract cream or 0.025% tretinoin cream in split-faced design (right and left side of periorbital wrinkles) and apply once-daily for 12 weeks. The primary outcome was assessed by using SEw measured from visioscan and photographs from VISIA®, evaluation was performed every 4-week interval. Secondary outcome were reduction of periorbital hyperpigmentation, side-effects, periorbital skin hydration evaluated every 4- week interval by Mexameter Melanin index measurement, questionnaires, coneometer, as respectively. Moreover, patients satisfaction score evaluated by questionnaires on 12th week.
Reuslts: 29 of 30 (10 males and 19 females) completed study. Not statistically significant difference between topical 0.1% Jasmine rice extract and topical 0.025% tretinoin in the treatment of periorbital wrinkles. But topical 0.1% Jasmine rice extract has Statistically significant better the reduction of periorbital hyperpigmentation since 8th week, improve skin tightening at 12th week (only crows feet area) lower side effect ,improvement of periorbital skin hydration and better Patients satisfaction score than topical 0.025% tretinoin.
Conclusion: Topical 0.1% Jasmine rice extract and topical 0.025% tretinoin are not difference efficacy in the treatment of periorbital wrinkles. But topical 0.1% Jasmine rice extract higher effective than topical 0.025% tretinoin in term of reduction of periorbital hyperpigmentation, lower side effect ,improvement of periorbital skin hydration and better Patients satisfaction score.
